Liv Tyler inspired Elf Ears new plastic surgery trend for youth too young to remember original Star Trek?
Spock ears, or elf ears as they are known to the younger generation that grew up watching the Lord Of The Rings trilogy instead of the original Star Trek. The look is not surprisingly becoming all the rage among young folks experimenting with a cadre of new body modification techniques, including
gross tongue splitting, unusual piercings, and even prosthetic horns. However, these pointed ears are actually quite elegant in their appearance, lending themselves gracefully to slim, long faces. As such, to see pictures of the finished product can actually aesthetically enhance a person’s appearance if they look like Liv (see photo left)… occasionally, that is.
But there are green celebrities who have popularized the look. Feminine faces especially seem to reap the benefit, as many have fallen for the elf character played by green celebrity Liv Tyler in Lord of the Rings. [For anyone who has lived under a rock the past three decades, actress Liv Tyler is the daughter of Aerosmith rocker Steven Tyler who is the new judge on American Idol.]
And while green celebrity Leonard Nimoy and his Star Trek Vulcan character Spock popularized the pointed ear look in the 1960s, the look is becoming popular again. Now there are body modification artists capable of perfroming the surgery almost as simple as an ear or nose piercing, even if more painful than a typical piercing.
Body modification artist, Steve Haworth charges $600 for the modification according to ABC:
“There’s a lot of people out there who have an inner vision of themselves and they want to express that to the world around them,” said Haworth. “I’m very happy to be an artist that can provide that kind of work.”
But doctors warn, according to ABC:
“The real risks are one – major defromity of the ear, which is very easy to have happen and two, infection of the ear,” said Dr. Arthur W. Perry, author of Straight Talk About Cosmetic Surgery. “And if infection occurs, it can destroy the ear within days.”
“It’s very difficult and often it’s not possible to fully reconstruct a nice-looking ear,” he said.
Whether you call them Vulcan ears or elf ears, the trend is making headway in body modification circles. It can be painful, but some people swear by the look and say they feel much more themselves with the delicately shaped ears.
